WASH Project
The Sustainable Water and Sanitation Project undertaken from September 2013 to December 2014 under the World Bank/IDA funding and still ongoing is to provide water and sanitation facilities to about 200,000 people living in Rural/Small Towns in Central and Western Regions of Ghana. The Community subprojects component of the project includes institutional latrines for schools and household toilet/sanitation facilities and hygiene promotion activities that emphasize community-led total sanitation (CLTS) in Rural/Small Towns. The project is placing a strong emphasis on sanitation with the intention of giving this sub-sector much more attention than it has previously received. The aim of the sanitation and hygiene intervention is to ensure ownership and sustainability by investing community sensitization and mobilization activities towards the creation of a congenial environment for households to invest in hygiene and sanitation. There is therefore a shift from provision of subsidy to community ownership, mutual support and local solutions for sanitation and behavioral change communication practices.
Good Governance project
Joncaring Foundation also implemented a 6-month project with sponsorship from the World Bank/Centre for Development Partners. The project provided an experience in promoting civic engagement and effective partnership between resident women and service providers as well as the Ashaiman Municipal Assembly in the provision of services including improved sanitation.
